Memories Dale Rush
Football
Weak knees, sweaty palms, wondering if I would make it out onto the field or the wrestling mat with out having a panic attack. But I close my eyes, take a deep breath and tell myself I am the best person to be in this spot. I am a winner and I thrive on pressure. This is my time to shine and I am going to make the best of it. This will be a description of the experiences I have encountered in my sports career.
The first football game that I have ever played in was the most nerve-wracking experience in my life! I was only eight years old and a new comer to the game. We had been practicing for months for this one game and I was named the starting Quarter back, the leader and commander on the field. It was my job to lead the team to a victory, but I had a lot of self doubt and did not know that I could come through under the pressure.
The opposing team looked like giants compared to me and I was scared out of my mind. My coach saw it in my eyes. I will never forget this moment. My coach pulled me aside and had a talk with me. He said I was the best man for the job and he believed in me and I could pull it off. Those words gave me the confidence that I needed to succeed and I was ready to play. So I said good bye to those butter fly’s and was ready to get down to business and play.
The first play of the game went as terrible as it could go, I dropped the snap and got sacked for a loss. But that was not going to stop me. I slowly got up and got my head in the game. By the end of the game I had two passing touch downs and one rushing and got named MVP of the game and pulled out the victory for our team.
Boxing
I wake up and was ready to rumble. This was the day of my first boxing match and I was ready to “lay the lumber” so to speak. I had trained for weeks for this match and I was going to except nothing but a win.
I was 10 years old and out for a win and to leave my mark on this sport. I had never worked so hard for something. I had the training, the skills and the stamina to win this match. Yet, walking into the building, I had the worst headache in my life and had doubt whether or not I would be able to win.
I stepped into the ring and was ready for war. The kid on the other side of me was standing in my way and I was going to run threw him. Nothing was going to stop me from winning. I won the first round by a lot and felt confident; the second round went the same way, as well as the third round. Next thing I know, the match was over and I was expecting to get my hand raised as the victor. We walk in the middle of the ring and the referee gave the round by round winners. I won all three rounds and took home my first victory and all the confidence in the world.
Reflection
From my first experiences in the two sports that I excelled in were the best that I could of hoped for. After reflecting on these moments I know now that these sports made me the person that I am today. They gave me strength, knowledge, and a work ethic that I need to be a successful adult.
