Projects

I am a firm believer in active learning. Therefore, students often complete projects for my classes in addition to writing formal research papers. I have indexed the student projects by general category.

  • Teaching/Learning Modules
Students selected a specific class taught at Schoolcraft College for which they designed a teaching/learning module that internationalized the course by incorporating information about China into it. The module needed to advance one of the course's course objectives. To organize their modules, students used a format developed by the Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education.

  • Puritan Inspired Poetry
One of the assessments I often use in my Early American history class is to ask students to write a short poem in the Puritan tradition.

  • Film Resources
My ENG 200 students have select ans analyze short films from a variety of points of view. In the process, they have compiled a list of resources which can be used by future film students. My HIST 151 students have compiled a recommended list of You Tube videos that can be used to teach about Native Americans.

  • Editorial Cartoons
As part of a lesson on political cartoons that is part of my Nineteenth-Century American history class, students draw an editorial cartoon in which you take a position on a nineteenth-century constitutional issue.

  • Posters
I often ask students to prepare posters on various topics for campus events such as "Celebrate Learning" and the "Multicultural Fair."

  • Food for Thought
Students select a specific food that would have been eaten during the historical period we are studying. They then do research about what the food tells us about the culture in which it was eaten.

  • Presentations
Here are my notes for some student presentations.
