"Every Day is Filled with Tasks"
by Brea Buffone
Every day is filled with tasks,
Tasks that constantly need tending to;
Responsibilities, work, and family matters,
Or simply talking with a friend or two.
Each day the sun rises,
At night it sets on the horizon;
This is the one thing
That always remains certain.
Life constantly changes around us,
Never giving us a clue
It doesn’t ever stop
Not for me or for you.
It is for this reason that I look above
In search of a higher power
For the strength I need to keep moving
When I would rather give up and cower.
This lesson is valuable for any human being
Live every day for what it is
The heavens will help you to leave what’s bad behind you
And wait for a better day than this.
Author's Reflection
In “The Puritan Tradition and American Memory,” Scott Atkins said that all we have to go off of to guess what the Puritan mindset would be are written documents; therefore, everything is open to interpretation.
The Puritans were strictly religious in their ways, striving to bring the church to a state of purity. They believed that all people should look toward God and lead a life as if they were heaven bound, even if they weren’t part of the elect (the group of people that was said to be saved). They believed the human state was one of sin and wickedness. Most of the poetry from the Fire and Ice: Puritan Poetry website reflected this very idea. Almost everything was about turning to God and asking him to save a soul, or at least mentioned the power of Christ. This is why I chose to include the idea of looking to a higher power in my poem. A Puritan wouldn’t live life according to his/her own ideas and standards, he/she essentially would look to God and was told to lead a life that He would be pleased with so he/she could be saved.
