In early American history, I often ask students to write a poem from the Puritan mind set.

"Salvation in the Sun"

by Laura Khalil

Rays beat down upon white skin
Finally exposed after a long winters run
A young girl now has time
To find salvation in the sun.

Next to the pool she lay
To achieve the perfect tan
Never leaving the concrete
For as long as she can.

Summer has finally arrived
And it allows for such fun
For young women and men alike
To find salvation in the sun.

Whether in a field or woods
Or outside by a pool
Whether it’s to break a sweat
Or find someplace cool.

It’s just so peaceful
And it’s only just begun
Summer time is here
To find salvation in the sun.

Author's Reflection

Puritan literature is seen as an ideology and sets a moral code that the people claimed to have lived by. Scott Atkins describes that when people think of a “Puritan mind-set” they often think of dismal, elitist, and intolerance because of the witch trials and other events they have become famous for. Although, he does acknowledge that Puritan literature was seen as reflecting an ideology and a moral code. Also, Puritan literature helps define pastimes, traditions, and celebrations.
