In early American history, I often ask students to write a poem from the Puritan mind set.

"Choices"

by Teresa Stanley

Help me, Dear Lord, as I pray,
As I struggle once more, through thy day,
From right or wrong, I am at bay,
Help me, Dear Lord, in what I say.

Thou small or large,
Numerous choices made,
Impact others, they will,
Thy future is laid.

Once more, I find myself at thy summit,
Mine heart with Thee, but mind doeth plummet.
You helped me, Dear Lord, through all thy past,
My Faith in Thee will surely last.

What shall I do?
What shall I say,
To graciously make it through thy day?

Author's Reflection

I compare myself by also doing both good and bad, struggling for identity. Like the Puritan documents, I too am compared to others. The above poem reflects my expression of intent to do well and to make good choices. The essay also points out the American’s understanding of their place in time. My poem reflects the struggle that this day will have on the future and how important the decision to “do good” will be. Every day these words are prayed, I am noting how important the day will be by historicizing the present.
